An Interview with
JAN RUHE
Q Jan, can you please tell us a little bit about your early influences?
A I was born in Florida and our family moved when I was very young to Texas. I grew up in and went to college in Texas. My grandmother was a big influence on me. She was very positive and was so sweet to me. I was influenced by music from an early age and I remember when the Beatles were first introduced on the Ed Sullivan Show.
Q How did you discover network marketing and what attracted you to it?
A In 1977, when my daughter Sarah was one year old, I was invited to a home party at a neighbour's. I then booked a home party myself in a cosmetic company that ultimately went out of business. Someone in that company explained network marketing to me and then and it made sense. I tried to sell the products and failed miserably but looked at it as a learning experience. Then in 1979 I was introduced to selling educational toys, books and games and tried again, this time, I succeeded beyond my wildest expectations!
Q What where your early years in network marketing like?
A When I actually started selling educational toys from my home, my family and friends did not support me at all. I then asked everyone on my street. Finally someone in my church said she would have a home party for me. I also asked all the mothers in Sarah's pre-school class to come to my home and I was hostess to a party in my own home. I had such raw enthusiasm and strong determination that I used my mouth and excitement and ultimately recruited a few people, sold some products and made about $5,000 for my first entire year, never dreaming I could make that a month! When I started I was pregnant with my third child, had a 4 year old and 2 year old and an unhappy marriage, so that first year was quite a struggle. However, I would not be denied what I wanted and I went after building my business with a vengeance!
Q As a network-marketing millionaire and the Top Diamond Director with Discovery Toys what has been the 'secret' to your success?
A I have built leaders and focused on their success. I have also had a personal growth and development program whereby I outlined over 500 books and listened only to those living the lifestyle I wanted. Make no doubt about it, I wanted to be financially secure, I wanted to be a role model to my children and give them the lifestyle of the rich and famous and I was willing to work for it. I also ignored the critics and pressed on. I would not be denied.
Q What qualities can men learn from women to become better networkers?
A I do love men but I don't know if a man can learn from a woman any better than a woman can learn from a man. I know there are words to learn to say to help build your network marketing business regardless if you are a man or a woman. Men were my only teachers for years in network marketing. I wanted to learn so I paid attention to their words and actions and modelled them. So, why can't a man listen to me and possibly pick up some great tips that he can make his own? Of course a man can learn from a woman, it's a matter of choice. After all, I am not about hype; I am consistent about my words that make a huge difference. I believe when the student is ready the teacher will appear, man or woman.
Q You have written six very popular books: MLM Nuts $ Bolts, Fire Up, The Master Presentation Guide, True Leadership, The Lady of the Rings, Go Diamond and The Rhino Spirit. And now your books are being printed in other languages! What has inspired you to put pen to paper?
A My husband, Bill, years ago encouraged me to spread my ideas, passion and words and enthusiasm around the world to those searching for tips and ideas and encouragement to be the best they can be. I wrote these books to try and deposit the wisdom that I had learned into the hearts and minds of others. I know how it feels to be poor and I hated living that lifestyle. I KNOW without a doubt that if I made it in Network Marketing from rags to riches then it HAS to be doable for others. I don't have all the answers but I have learned some very, very valuable information in my path. I plan to keep on writing and helping others become publishers of great information in many languages!
Q You do training for Network Marketers, how is this direction working for Jan Ruhe - Industry trainer, as opposed to sponsoring leader?
A Yes, for 20 years I helped build a business in the USA only. People from all over the world began to hear about my success and determination and began to seek me out from different companies all over the world. I had so many phone calls asking me if I would mentor people that I had to start charging for my time. I charged too little at the beginning and much of my lifetime during the day went to helping people in other companies. I have fantastic leaders who have been with me for years who really run my Network Marketing business. I try to take excellent care of them and cannot appreciate them enough. I do special private events for them and really try to make them feel special because they are.
In the meantime, as life went along, I increased my hourly fees and then people started booking me to speak for their companies. By that time, I had started a 2-day event for serious networkers called Jan Ruhe's MLM Nuts $ Bolts training. At the first event only 20 people showed up, now people are clambering for me to do this 2-day event worldwide with hundreds of people getting massive results after my events. Gavin Scott with Kleeneze in the UK was the first person outside of the USA to book the entire 2-day event for people in his organization and it sold out within the first 5 minutes. For this year I am doing the 2-day event with both Gavin Scott's organization and with Jayne Leach with Forever Living Products, plus I'm taking my 2-day event all over Canada. And then I got invited to South Korea and that trip was a trip of a lifetime. Over 8,000 people attended the event that Dr. Kim of MLMKorea put together. The South Koreans are on fire with desire!
As regarding building my Network Marketing business I don't sponsor first line people anymore, however, I still actively recruit but not when I am speaking to other companies. My company is a USA based company only. I have 15 front line leaders and when I get leads or recruits I direct them to join with my front line leaders. I have loved being a leader in my company but it's time that my leaders get the major recognition in my company. I have paid the price for getting to Diamond and having the courage to stay at that level and not make excuses but to make sure that I maintain the Diamond level.
Q Which do you prefer, building the business or being a trainer?
A I love being with the leaders in my organization. I count them as my friends. There are some who have chosen to build their organizations independent of me anyway so I don't have a large group of needy people. I have built a true Network Marketing business where I have leaders who are like locomotives, they are leading the field, which gives me plenty of time to write and speak and train worldwide.
Also, my children are no longer young and at home so that has indeed freed up many, many hours of my lifetime to go out into the world to spread my wisdom and experience. When I see the results that people get after working with me, worldwide, that makes me want to continue worldwide teaching and training. Their enthusiasm, their genuine interest in learning how they can change their lives for the better forever is a real thrill for me. It's addicting to me. I love making friends worldwide and am enjoying the travel. And to be invited back year after year after year is all the recognition that the leaders and their organizations can possibly give me. To get recognized worldwide for making a difference truly has been rewarding and fulfilling.
I can't say that I prefer it to being a distributor because my early years I built the business with a passion, a burning desire. I struggled; I had personal setbacks that paved the way for comebacks. There were stupid critics that today I am able to laugh at, people who said terrible things about me, took shots at me and tried to waylay me in my path to success. I was able to stay home, as was at the top of my goal list, and raise 3 beautiful children, Sarah, Clayton and Ashley. I was able to college educate them, travel with them and give them courage to be great young people. I attracted the man of my dreams, have been married now for over 13 years to Bill Ruhe and have the lifestyle I worked so hard to get. How can anyone ask for more? I have it all, a Network Marketing business that pays me residual income for life and a worldwide speaking/training business and am an author, a mother and a wife and have friends worldwide! It just doesn't get much better!
Q What do networkers learn at your training seminars?
A Mainly, belief, enthusiasm, a never give up spirit, a positive attitude, the words to say to sponsor more people, and the courage to go for greatness. There is a day that you get into Network Marketing but nothing happens until the day that Network Marketing gets into you. At my seminars, Network Marketing gets into them. I teach them closing words to say, how to increase their sales, ideas for contests, words to say to promote others up the compensation plan and so much more. After all, 22 years of experience is quite a lot in this industry. Most people get excited then lose their excitement because they get rejected. I help them overcome this fear and many other fears. Mostly, they get a fire of desire for life. I do not teach and train with hype. I am a soft-spoken woman with a great deal of determination. I spread goodness and kindness wherever I speak.
Q What have been the most memorable times in your network-marketing career so far?
A This is easy! May I share a few moments: In early 2000 my company had an incentive trip to Paris. During that trip, I entertained my top super leaders at the Ritz in Paris and then jumped on a train by myself and took 10 days off. I took the train through the Alps to Evian, France and checked into the Royal Evian Spa for 10 days of pampering! One of the days, I took a boat from Evian to Laussane, caught the train to Geneva and spent the day shopping in Geneva! Another day I took a water bottle and filled it up from the Evian source coming out of the Alps! Awesome lifestyle!
A company called Exclusive Touch flew me to South Africa to speak for their entire company. When I was introduced, the entire company sales reps stood up and did the Fire Up! In Africa no less! It's a chant that I teach in the Fire Up! tapes! It was such fun! After the event, the DuPreeze's flew Bill and I in their private jet up to their private game ranch called Bahati. After going on safari we sat at the top of the mountain range and looked over Botswana and Zimbabwe. We had a bush brie, swam in virgin lakes, tried new foods, met and made lifetime friends and loved being in Africa. I have been there several times since then! We have taken the Rovos Rail from Pretoria South Africa down to Cape Town and I reserved an entire half of a train car for just Bill and I! In 2000 alone I went back to Africa to speak to the same company and while there I stayed a month and went on around 18 safaris on just that trip! I loved being out in the bush with the animals, ohhhh!!!! The lifestyle!
Upon arriving by train at Leeds/Bradford in the UK, Bill and I were picked up at the hotel by a couple in Kleeneze. As we headed for the Abundance for Life Centre, there were coaches lining the highway. I remarked that there must be a big sporting event somewhere close by. Keith, our host said "Oh no! Jan, those are coaches that were filled with people from Scotland who are coming today to hear you speak!" I was very excited and very appreciative about that!
Jetting to South Korea was another incredible memory. Being on the front cover of a magazine in South Korea was exciting. Meeting all the leaders for breakfast with Dr. Kim was fantastic; having Heather Kim be our interpreter was great. I loved the South Koreans. Their enthusiasm is contagious and we can't wait to be back with our new friends there.
The day I became a Millionaire in Network Marketing. Becoming friends worldwide with Gavin Scott and Bonnie Arapes, Rob Forster and Ray Aziz, Bob Webb, John Curtis and Jayne Leach, Louise and George Adrian, Cathy Barber, Sue and Peet Dupreez, Dr. Kim and of course all of our special, wonderful, and exceptional PowerTeam National Sales Directors through so many years. Seeing my daughter Sarah recognized as the top distributor in team recruiting in Discovery Toys in 2002 was also a highlight and cherished memory.
Being a speaker for Tom Hopkins at his Boot Camp, and giving my testimonial about my mentor Jim Rohn in front of him at the Jim Rohn 2 day event in Dallas were amazing memories that I cherish.
Having my organization be the top Diamond organization year after year after year has been an outstanding memory. My successline is very productive and the PowerTeam leaders are the best. I am proud of all the leaders in our organization and appreciate their efforts and energy and let them know that often.
The most important memory is that I didn't miss a soccer game or football game through the years my children have been growing up. I have enjoyed being with my children at home more than any memory. My children have been my life. And today, travelling the world with my handsome, smart and caring husband, how can life be any better! They are the wind beneath my wings!
Q What advice would you give to someone just starting out in network marketing?
A Read and feed your mind, listen to those in your company who are making their compensation plan work. Hang out with positive people, don't take rejection personally, attend the right seminars, turn your car into a classroom, read the how-to books, leadership books and don't take yourself too seriously. Get some rest, make a plan, plan to work and work your plan. If you are with a company that gets products to you on time and your cheque on time, stick with it. Never let anyone kill your dreams, be the most determined person you know. Forgive those who hurt you and move on. Do not procrastinate. Your future starts today! Never give up on me and I'll never give up on you! Go for greatness, fire up, ignite your passion and build a Network Marketing business that will pay you residual income forever. Why not you and why not now?
Thank You Jan
